When I started speaking to other women about the importance of investing, I saw a pattern:
Most women are scared.
Unsure of where to start.
Worried about losing money.
Worried about making mistakes.
Thinking they need a lot of money, skills & time to get started.
Believes I recognised in myself, a few years ago.
But it doesn't have to be like that.
This is why my FemaleFinance newsletter & my coaching business were born.
I started investing in May 2017. At the time I lived in South Africa, just started being self-employed, and did not pay into any retirement fund. I didn’t put much thought into it, but my partner at the time worked at Africa’s largest private investment company. So it was a fairly easy choice to start and invest in one of their funds. I signed up, picked one of the funds they recommended, set up a monthly debit order, and forgot about it.
One year later I remember sitting in a room full of women at one of the monthly Future Females events I used to go to, listening to a female writer presenting her latest book. She shared her personal journey from debt into financial independence and walked us through the options of passive investing with ETFs. ET-what?
I had no idea what she was talking about. I don’t remember ever hearing about ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) before. At least not to that extent. I didn't even know there was a difference between active and passively managed funds. I just knew I was investing in something and an expert is taking care of it for me.
I never thought I could take money matters into my own hands. I didn't have confidence in myself. I still remember my dad telling me stories about how he lost money during the crash in 2008, and how dangerous the stock market can be. So it just seemed like something to leave to the experts. Something not worth pursuing.
Turns out I was wrong. That event changed my view completely. I still remember coming home, buzzing and excited, feeling a sense of independence as I was about to embark on a journey of learning, exploration, and financial growth.
I was ready to step into the unknown, take control of my financial situation, and work towards feeling safe and secure around money.
Fast forward to 2023, and I'm the proud owner of a well-diversified multiple 6-figure portfolio consisting of stocks, crypto and real estate.
